What is a Doula?

A doula is a professional who provides emotional and physical support to a mother and her partner before, during, and after childbirth. The job of a doula typically involves the following responsibilities:

Providing information and resources

A doula helps expectant parents understand the birth process and the options available to them so that they can make an informed decision. They can also provide information on childbirth education, pain management techniques, and postpartum recovery.

Emotional support

A doula offers comfort, continuous presence, reassurance, and encouragement throughout the birth process. They help the mother and her partner feel empowered and confident in their ability to give birth.

Physical support

A doula provides physical support to the mother during labor and delivery. This can include helping with positioning, massaging, counter pressure, and providing comfort measures such as warm compresses and hydration.

Advocacy

A doula serves as an advocate for the mother and her partner, by supporting their right to make decisions about their own body and baby. Although a doula cannot directly speak for their client, a doula can amplify the birthing person’s voice, encourage questions to be asked or preferences stated, create a space for decisions to be made without pressure, and facilitate communication between client and care providers.

Positive birth outcome

Research shows that those who choose doula support have better birth outcomes, are less likely to experience birth complications, have lowered cesarean section rates as well as other interventions. They also found that doula support lowered the use of epidurals and found mother’s were significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding.

Postpartum support

A doula can provide support and guidance in the days and weeks following birth. This can include help with breastfeeding, nourishment, rest, advice on postpartum recovery, and referrals to other resources as needed.
Overall, the main goal of a doula is to provide support and care to the mother and her partner during one of the most important and transformative experiences of their lives.
